Types of GNL

Involves teaching an entire class or modules of a class with a partner professor(s) and their students in another country. An example may be teaching an already existing course on supply chain management with a French business school. The main component involves group projects on a particular topic made up of French and US students.

Involves incorporating virtual international programming into an on-campus course, either in lieu of or as a pre- or post- complement to short-term faculty-led study abroad. Could include components such as virtual city tours, “homestays,” class projects, cultural activities, or interaction with host country nationals or students.

Involves collaborative research projects. For example, the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences at UNC Charlotte receives data from a public health department at a university in Tanzania and plots the data to create GIS maps that show health-related trends.

Other types of GNL activities may include the following:

• Collaborative student conferences where students demonstrate their interest/learning through interactive sessions.
• Collaborative workshops focusing on a particular topic.
• Other virtual projects that bring students together.
