International Speaker Series: Daniel Mulhall, Ambassador of Ireland to the United States

Daniel Mulhall became the 18th Ambassador of Ireland to the United States in August 2017.

Ambassador Mulhall’s initial appointments were in India, Austria, the European Union and Edinburgh, Scotland. In 2005, while Ireland’s Ambassador to Malaysia, he was conferred with an Honorary Fellowship by the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland for his work in connection with the Asian tsunami.

During his diplomatic career, Ambassador Mulhall has also held a number of positions at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, including as Director-General for European Affairs, 2005-2009, a member of the Secretariat of the Forum for Peace and Reconciliation (1994-95) and as Press Counsellor in the Department.

Most recently, he has served as Ireland’s Ambassador to London (2013-17) and Berlin (2009-2013). During this period, he had many speaking engagements at universities throughout Britain and Germany.

Ambassador Mulhall has a keen interest in Irish history and literature and is the author of A New Day Dawning: A Portrait of Ireland in 1900 (Cork, 1999) and co-editor of The Shaping of Modern Ireland: A Centenary Assessment (Dublin, 2016).

Ambassador Mulhall will speak on “A Virtuous Circle: Ireland, the EU and the U.S”
