Steps to Develop a GNL Course

How to develop a class to class GNL course

The steps listed below will provide an outline of how to develop a GNL course at UNC Charlotte.

Step 1: Submit the Expression of Interest Form

In order to provide you with additional information and better understand your goals, please submit the Expression of Interest form.

Step 2: Attend a GNL Information Session

New to GNL? Attend a GNL Information Session to learn more about the process, timelines, funding, and resources available.

Info Session DateTime/LocationHow to Register
Friday, February 2, 20243:00- 4:00 pm EST, via Zoom or in person in CHHS 207Submit the Expression of Interest Form

If unable to attend the GNL Information Session, please email us at globaleducation@charlotte.edu.

Step 3: Complete the GNL Canvas Course

Once you have submitted the Expression of Interest form and attended the Information Session, the Office of International Programs will enroll you in the GNL Canvas course. The GNL Canvas course will prepare you to submit a proposal and successfully design and launch a GNL course.

Step 4: Identify a Partner

UNC Charlotte enjoys the benefits of an extensive network of partner universities. Although it is not required to collaborate with a UNC Charlotte partner institution, additional resources are available to faculty working with a UNC Charlotte partner university, as the staff of the Office of International Programs will be more familiar and have better knowledge of the faculty, staff, curriculum, and support available at those institutions as opposed to a non-UNC Charlotte partner.

When partnering with faculty at other institutions, ensure that they share equal commitment to this new teaching paradigm and that they have the necessary institutional support, both academically and technologically, to be successful. Additionally, you should be prepared to be accommodating of partner university bureaucratic differences. For example, even small changes to a syllabus may need complete approval at another institution.

Step 5: Submit a Proposal & Obtain Possible Funding

After you complete the GNL Canvas course and identify a faculty partner, you are eligible to submit a formal proposal and be considered for funding. Please submit the proposal by the relevant deadline below.

ActivitySummer 2024/Fall 2024Spring 2025
Proposal dueMonday, March 11, 2024TBD
OIP review and funding decision madeFriday, April 5, 2024TBD

A review committee will be appointed by the Office of International Programs to rate proposals according to the following criteria:

  • Details and clarity of project description
  • Timeline for implementation of activities
  • Level of innovation and creativity of the design of the student group projects
  • Strength of connection of the assessment of students’ work to the “Cultural Awareness Outcome”
  • Appropriateness of technology for activities and partner university (if known)
  • Feasibility of the proposal

Up to $1250 in funding is available depending on need and nature of the project.

Please note: If you are repeating a GNL class from the previous year, you will receive $500. You do not need to redo your proposal for a repeat, but will be asked to complete the evaluation form as usual.

Step 6: Design & Launch your GNL Course

Once you submit a formal proposal and it has been accepted, you will be asked to attend a 1 hour workshop (date and time TBA). After the workshop you will be able to work with Dr. Yongling Gorke or Dr. Joe Hoff in OIP, to assist you in the design and implementation of your GNL course. Please note: The GNL collaboration form (available in the Canvas site) will be due before your GNL collaboration takes place.

Step 7: Submit the Evaluation Form

Upon completion of your course, you will be expected to submit an evaluation to assess the success of your GNL course and provide feedback to the Office of International Programs.
