Building Global Connections: Fulbright Scholars Find Community at UNC Charlotte

This past August, Charlotte Global’s Office of Intercultural and Educational Experiences (OIEE) welcomed 26 Fulbright grantees representing 21 countries as part of the Fulbright Pre-Academic Program.

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education, the three-week program is part of the Fulbright Program, the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange initiative. It provides international graduate students with an intensive introduction to academic life in the United States while encouraging cross-cultural engagement and relationship-building.

This year’s cohort represented countries across the Middle East and North Africa, South and East Asia, Europe, and Latin America, underscoring the global scope of the Fulbright Program.

Throughout the program, scholars strengthened their academic English skills through courses in Listening and Speaking, Reading and Writing, and Contemporary Issues in the United States. Designed to support a successful transition to graduate study, the curriculum helped participants build language proficiency, cultural awareness, and academic confidence. In addition to their academic courses, they took part in 11 specialized workshops and professional development sessions covering topics such as academic success, communication skills, and life in the United States. Workshops led by UNC Charlotte faculty and staff further expanded the curriculum, exploring U.S. classroom culture, academic integrity, communication across cultures, presenting to different kinds of audiences, and navigating the U.S. healthcare system.

Beyond the classroom, scholars experienced the culture and hospitality of North Carolina through a range of educational and community-based activities. The group explored the Biltmore Estate, navigated the rapids at the U.S. National Whitewater Center, attended a Charlotte Knights baseball game, and connected with local residents through events such as a pickleball social held in partnership with the Young Professionals of the World Affairs Council of Charlotte. A particularly memorable highlight was a community dinner that welcomed scholars into local homes, offering many their first opportunity to experience American hospitality firsthand.

One of the program’s most memorable additions this year was the inaugural Fulbright Cultural Showcase, which invited scholars to share the traditions, foods, music, and stories of their home countries with one another and members of the UNC Charlotte community. The event highlighted the breadth of backgrounds represented in the cohort while creating opportunities for cultural exchange and shared learning.

“One of the most rewarding aspects of this program is witnessing the connections, growth, and mutual understanding that emerge when participants from a variety of backgrounds come together,” said Rachel Ladenheim, Assistant Director of the Office of Intercultural and Educational Experiences and Program Director of the Fulbright Pre-Academic Program. “Each year, participants bring unique perspectives, experiences, and talents that enrich everyone involved.”

Ladenheim pointed to a student-organized concert outside the Student Union Art Gallery as a powerful example of the program’s impact. During the event, grantees shared musical traditions from around the world, creating a vibrant celebration that resonated across campus.

“We were honored to welcome these scholars to UNC Charlotte and to be part of their introduction to academic life in the United States,” said Jennifer Armentrout, Assistant Director of Charlotte Global. “Their presence enriched our campus community, and we are excited to hear about the impact they will create in the years ahead.”

As these accomplished Fulbright scholars begin graduate studies at universities across the country, they carry forward the knowledge, relationships, and intercultural insights gained during their time at UNC Charlotte. While the program is designed to prepare participants for academic success, its influence often extends well beyond the classroom through friendships formed, ideas exchanged, and connections built across borders.

Charlotte Global is proud to have played a role in welcoming this remarkable group of scholars and looks forward to seeing the contributions they will make in their professions, communities, and countries around the world.

Though their time in Charlotte was brief, they will always be part of the Niner Nation family.
